Synchronizer Assembly #87537028 ensures that two rotating shafts have matching speeds before they're engaged. This prevents the gears from clashing or grinding while shifting. It consists of a synchronizer hub, a friction cone and a synchronizer ring.

The friction cone attaches to the input shaft, while the synchronizer ring attaches to the output shaft. When the driver changes gears, the synchronizer ring presses against the friction cone, causing the input shaft to slow down. Once the input and output shafts are rotating at the same speed, the synchronizer ring is released and the two shafts are engaged.
